Description
OVERVIEW
Many progressive churches provide some resources for the needy; however, they reserve them
for their members exclusively or coordinate outreach programs on a limited basis. The church is
not always aware of the resources available in the community and may not be prepared to
provide the counseling or financial resources needed to support the needy. Many families live
away from their extended family and our culture supports the concept that adults should be
functional and independent without extended family support.
INSTRUCTIONS
To write an essay in which you:
? Describe ways in which the family, church, and community meet the needs of individuals
in your community.
? Compare current practices vs. ideal solutions.
? Analyze what works, and what could be done better considering Biblical
principles/directives.
The Biblical design of care for the needy is:
? First, it is the responsibility of the family.
? Second, it is the responsibility of the church.
? Third, it is the responsibility of the community.
TASKS
1. Discuss your thoughts on the responsibility of the family, the church and the community
to meet the needs of those in need (i.e. aging, homelessness, domestic violence or child
abuse, etc.).
2. Include biblical references and personal experiences. Here are some examples:
? If you attend a church that has outreach programs, please discuss the population they
are designed to reach and how services are provided.
? If you work within a care providing system or are aware of parachurch ministries,
please discuss how that system works within the community to meet the needs of the
population.
