Human Biology & Genetics History Overview Study of Hereditary Discussion
Instructions: Write a short, term paper on the topic you have struggled with the most during this semester. In the Week 9 discussion board (which I put Genetics), you shared what topic you struggled most with in the course. Your assignment is to do research and write an overview of the topic that you struggled with the most.
Some areas that you can cover your paper include, but are not limited to:
a brief history of the topic,
an overview of the basic concepts and theory of the topic,
related diseases that are associated with the topic,
interesting studies that are going on in that particular field of study.
The goal of this assignment should be to take your most difficult topic, and through studying extensively, make it the topic you’re most familiar with.
Formatting:
Your paper should be a minimum of four complete (full), typed pages in the body of the text. The four-page minimum does not include the cover page, references, figures, tables, illustrations, or bibliography.
You must include a bibliography of your citations. Go to easybib.com (Links to an external site.) for help if needed. Scientific papers use the APA style format. Humanities courses are usually asked to style according to MLA guidelines. Students in science and research fields, meanwhile, are often encouraged to follow the APA guidelines (no abstract is needed).
Avoid excessive use of lists, outlines, bulleted points, figures, and tables in the text. Use direct quotations sparingly. It is usually best to completely avoid direct quotations.
The margins should be one inch on all sides. All text should be double-spaced.
Text should be 12 points in size and of a standard font (e.g., Times, Calibri, or Palatino) in a standard style (for example, do not use all capitals or all bold text).
The paper must have at least five sources. Please use valid, reputable resources (see below for examples of good, fair, and unacceptable sources).
For information on how to write citations within the paper, please go to https://www.scientificstyleandformat.org/Tools/SSF-Citation-Quick-Guide.html (Links to an external site.)
Grading: The paper is worth a total of 80 points. The papers will be graded on the following criteria:
Content (55 points): The paper must adequately cover the specific areas mentioned in the instructions.
Sources (5 points): The number and quality of the sources is important. Books and professional journal articles are better sources than most web-based information.
Good sources: Books, articles from peer-reviewed scientific journals
Fair sources: Newsweek and other news magazines, Psychology Today, newspaper articles, web sites from reputable sources (e.g., NIMH)
Unacceptable sources (do not use any of these): Encyclopedias, health web sites (e.g., Webmd.com), Wikipedia, Ask.com, Yahoo.com, and web sites made by people without professional training in the field.
Writing, grammar, and spelling (15 points) Do not use contractions.
Overall assignment (5 points): Did you follow all the instructions, were you thorough, and did you write the paper in your own words.
Plagiarism and academic dishonesty: Plagiarism is copying the works of others, and then presenting them as your own. This is strictly forbidden. All direct quotes must have quotation marks and a citation. You must put information from other sources in your own words. Academic dishonesty will result in a final grade of “F.
