Description
Assessment 1A: Preliminary research aim and two questions – Individual
- This assessment is formative and not marked
- This assessment is designed to check you are on track before you begin Assessment 1B
- You need to select from one of the above sugar cane mill companies by week 1’sseminar/online session. On-campus students can advise their selection in class. External students should email their lecturer.
- Go to the website of the sugar cane mill company and do some preliminary reading.
- Click on the link for the UN SDGs and go to SDG 12 and do some preliminary reading.
- Develop a preliminary research aim, and two (2) research questions and email these to your tutor by 2355pm Singapore time on Friday of week 2.
- You are going to receive feedback on your submission to assist with going forward with assessment 1B.
Research aim
“The main goal or overarching purpose of a research project” (Thomas & Hodges, 2010).
Example: The aim of this study is “to investigate factors associated with partner violence” (Thomas & Hodges, 2010).
“Research aims are almost always positioned at the very beginning of a statement of research aims and questions. They are broad and introductory rather than specific and focused” (Thomas & Hodges, 2010).
Research questions
Research questions are “where the key issues to be focused on in a research project are stated in the form of questions” (Thomas & Hodges, 2010).
Example: “Question 1: Is alcohol consumption associated with increased partner violence?
Question 2: Is labour force status (employment, unemployment, not in the labour force) associated with variations in the incidence of partner violence?
Question 3: Are there differences between couples with an extended history of partner violence and couples with only a brief, recent history of partner violence?” (Thomas & Hodges, 2010).
Remember, in this instance, for assessment 1A, your research aims, and research questions are preliminary. You are going to refine these in assessment 1B.
Assessment 1B: Background literature review – individual (30%)Length: 2000 words (excluding references and appendix)
Investigate both white (scientific) and grey (industry) literature published within the last 5 (five) years i.e. Yr2018-2023 relating to sugar cane mills, keeping in mind the UN SDG 12.
The focus is on the Queensland sugar cane mill company you selected. However, you may find articles relating to sugar cane mill practices elsewhere that could be useful.
Your literature review needs to have a mix of at least ten (10) published articles from the white and grey literature. All articles must be from reputable sources.
This is a very useful link on literature reviews:

As you read and investigate further you are going to refine your research aim and two research questions (this is an iterative process). You must link the aim and research questions to the SDG 12.
Make note of relevant concepts, constructs, theories, or models from the white and grey literature that may assist with assessment 3.
