Western Nevada University The Creative Class Essay

Western Nevada University The Creative Class Essay

Part One

Short Essay

25 Points / 5 Each

In 2-3 paragraphs (or more, if you like), answer the question below in the context of sports in American history. As you’ll see, the question will require you to look no further than our main readings. In each response, be sure to include details as well as significance and meaning in the larger framework of our course and the big ideas that have shaped sports history.

Here’s the question: In Zirin’s book, he unpacks the recent history of sports in American culture. Identify one example from his book in which he answers the question: how are sports a mirror on our society? To round off your response, compare Zirin’s analysis with an example from the Davies text as well. Remember to keep the length requirement in mind–this is only a “short” essay.

Part Two

Shorter Responses

25 Points / 5 each

From your other materials: define the following in 2-3 sentences each. You’ll need to consider our several other “supplemental” materials aside from your main texts.

  1. The Creative Class
  2. Burnside
  3. Edmund Bacon
  4. Joe Jackson
  5. Kennesaw Mountain Landis

Hint: I need the context of OUR class and OUR discussions. Google will only get you half-way there. See our materials and brush up!

Part Three

50 Points

Each of our main authors (especially Zirin) paid special attention to the relationship between sports and protest culture. In an essay response of 2-3 pages (or so), make an argument that explores what they’ve agreed on in terms of the ways in which sports are a reflection of social and political climate of a given historical moment. Be a historian, emphasize “what changed over time” and in order to stick to the major themes of our course, remember to emphasize class, race or gender if possible in the example(s) you choose; just remember to stick to the texts–they are your “evidence” for the essay. The length requirement may seem like a lot for an exam, but you’ll do great: just keep it simple and keep it focused. No outside research allowed. If you write more than 2-3 pages, that’s ok–but I’ll need to see AT LEAST that much analysis. Your quotes from the books should not be more than 3-4 lines (of actual quoted material) for the entire essay. Evidence is important, but your analysis is what we need to emphasize in the section.
