A few of the different types of dementia include Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, lewy body dementia, and vascular dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is the presence of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary brain tangles. Symptoms include getting lost, repeating questions, and forgetting simple details. Frontotemporal dementia is an abnormal accumulation of proteins inside neurons of the frontal and temporal lobes. Symptoms include impulsive behaviors, emotional swings, balance issues, and difficulty forming speech. Lewy Body dementia affects the brain’s chemical messengers. Symptoms include the inability to concentrate or focus, insomnia, loss of coordination, and muscle rigidity. Vascular dementia is obstructed blood flow to the brain from blood clots, for example. Symptoms include hallucinations, memory loss, and poor judgment (“Understand different types of dementia,” n.d.). Rowena experienced vascular dementia and had to be put on TPA to clear her blood clots. 

Prompt 2:  Explain in detail the difference between ischemic vs. hemorrhagic stroke.

Ischemic stroke is caused by a lack of blood supply, hence the word ischemia. Hemorrhagic stroke is caused by bleeding into brain tissue (Narayanan, 2023). Ischemic stroke is much more common than hemorrhagic stroke. Sometimes, an ischemic stroke cannot be busted with thrombolytics, and this may result in severe patient conditions. Hemorrhagic stroke includes a ruptured blood vessel in the brain and therefore symptoms include vomiting, seizure, headache, and weakness on one side of the body. Rowena’s dementia is ischemic, as it is caused by a blood clot which means not enough blood was getting to her brain. It did not involved bleeding in her brain. Her daughter was able to detect the signs early and therefore she was rushed to the hospital where the nurses were able to clear the clot with TPA.
