For the final Comparative Project, students will complete a project that demonstrates their understanding of the concepts addressed during the semester.
Students will compare coverage of a major historical moment for people of African descent in a leading mainstream North American news media and contrast the coverage in a Black-owned news media.
(Historical can be any time from the early 2000s and before)
Students will also compare coverage of a contemporary moment for people of African descent in a leading mainstream North American news media and contrast the coverage in a Black-owned news media.
(Contemporary can be anytime between 2010 to the present)
Project breakdown:
For the final project, I want you to choose two topics. One topic should be historical, and one topic should be contemporary.
In both time periods, I want you to compare a Mainstream media outlet to a Black media outlet. For example, for the historical example, you can choose the Chicago Defender coverage of segregation and compare it to the New York Times’ coverage of segregation. Then, for the contemporary example, you can choose The Root’s coverage of Black healthcare disparities and compare it to CNN’s coverage of Black healthcare disparities.
In both comparisons, you just have to choose one article from each media outlet.
What should be in your final project?
This analysis should include a description of the media outlet, including, but not limited to:
History, ownership and editorial positions of news outlets
??Sources used in the different outlets
??Themes presented in the coverage
??Implications for conditions of people of African descent
??Offers an analysis of how the media outlets contrast and depict?Black life in the specific context/moment.
