In
the article, ‘Top Healthcare Industry Trends to Watch in 2018 and
Beyond’ by Yana Arnautova, she discusses five trends revolutionizing
healthcare today. One of those trends that I believe has a significant
impact is telemedicine. The patient experience of seeking and receiving
care has fundamentally changed (Arnautova, 2018). Throughout the
COVID-19 pandemic, there was a surge in telehealth services and an
ongoing need for remote and virtual care options. The
initial purpose of this measure was to contain the spread of disease,
however, it eventually gained popularity over in-person appointments.

While
telemedicine offers numerous advantages, it also has certain drawbacks.
A common concern among healthcare providers is the possibility of
declining patient-provider relationships (Jin et al., 2020). In my
personal opinion, there is a significant difference in the impact of
building a connection in person as opposed to communicating through
video or phone. Another limitation of using telehealth is that
healthcare providers cannot conduct proper comprehensive patient
assessments over video. Despite some patients’ reluctance to visit their
doctors in person, there are certain tests such as lab draws,
vaccinations, radiology tests, and other procedures that cannot be
conducted remotely and must be done on-site.

Due
to the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare industry has been compelled to
make rapid progress in the field of telemedicine and it has allowed
doctors to provide medical attention to their patients while minimizing
the possibility of spreading infections. Telemedicine has been proven to
be a viable solution for patient care during times of social isolation.
Although telemedicine cannot fully substitute traditional in-person
exams, it undoubtedly offers a viable and sustainable healthcare
delivery method, especially for patients who are confronted with access
barriers.

popularity of AI has risen over the past several years and is
anticipated to emerge as a significant healthcare trend in the future,
driven by the need for precision medication and cost reduction. It is
likely to empower APNs with data-driven insights and personalized care
choices. Nevertheless, concerns such as potential over-reliance on AI
and erosion of critical skills necessitate a balanced approach to
harnessing its potential while preserving critical competencies dictated
for APN roles in the healthcare realm. Consequently, the emergence of
AI in the health sector presents potential positive and negative effects
on APN roles, including in clinical decision-making, research,
education, and administrative processes.

AI
has the potential to influence various APN roles positively, including
those of educators, administrators, clinicians, researchers,
consultants, and administrators. According to Arnautova (2018),
artificial intelligence is expected and stands poised to usher in
numerous positive impacts in healthcare. Clinicians can employ
AI-powered diagnostic apparatuses to enhance accuracy and enhance
efficiency and personalized patient care. Educators could also rely on
technology when facilitating tailored learning experiences for scholars
or augmenting instructional approaches. In research, Manne and Kantheti
(2021) posit that artificial intelligence has the capability to expedite
data analysis, leading to breakthroughs and evidence-based acumens.
Besides, administrators could leverage AI for resource optimization and
refine healthcare delivery. Interconnecting machine learning and
entrepreneurship offers healthcare practitioners an opportunity to
create innovative solutions that improve patient outcomes and
operational efficiency (Davenport & Kalakota, 2019). Lastly, APNs
consultants and leaders can utilize artificial intelligence-driven
insights to inform their decisions, nurturing a future of data-informed
healthcare practices. Therefore, AI will empower APNs in their mandate
and help improve service delivery in healthcare.

Conversely,
machine learning poses immense negative impacts on various APN roles.
For clinicians, over-reliance on AI for diagnosis can erode clinical
judgment and interpersonal skills (Manne & Kantheti, 2021). In
education, integration of the artificial learning in training might
hinder hands-on training and reduce human interaction, which could
facilitate comprehension of learnt lessons. Moreover, Davenport and
Kalakota (2019) note that its rapid data analysis in research could
raise concerns about bias and ethical oversight that humans can avoid.
Administrators might also face resistance from staff who could be afraid
of losing their jobs due to venting technology. In entrepreneurship, an
inadequate understanding of machine learning’s complexities could lead
to ineffective solutions. Consultants and leaders might struggle with
ethical dilemmas and data security challenges, as Arnautova (2018)
envisions. Hence, a cautious approach is fundamental to ensure that AI
amplifies rather than undermines the core competencies and ethical
values central to APN roles.

In
retrospect, artificial intelligence carries the significant potential
to positively impact APN roles, offering improved diagnostics, research,
education, and administrative efficiency. However, its integration into
the healthcare sector requires vigilant consideration to mitigate
potential drawbacks, such as over-reliance and ethical concerns.
Therefore, APNs must strike a balance, embracing machine learning’s
transformative capabilities while preserving the unique human qualities
that define their roles in healthcare.
