What Do They Need to Be Able to Do?

INTRODUCTION

The Council on Social Work Education first introduced the idea of competency-based social work education with their 2008 EPAS (Robbins, 2014). This movement coincided with the movement of many other disciplines in higher education toward a competency-based model. It was believed that no longer should programs and learners be evaluated on what they teach or what they know, but on what the learners are able to demonstrate as a result of the education. The education field is still committed to this concept. Therefore, as you design your teaching module, you will need to decide what your learners or employees should be able to do after your module: In what skills or actions will they be able to engage? Competency-based education course development starts from the description of these competencies and then moves backward to address what must be taught, modeled, explained, and discussed first so that learners can demonstrate a competency.

Teaching Module Planning

For your final assignment, you will create a learning module as if you were a professor or a trainer in the field of social work.
