Part 1 -( Discussion Post: )

In this discussion you will imagine that you are sick and use the vocabulary and verbs (doler, tener) in Chapter 3 to describe your symptoms (aprox. 50 words in Spanish). Be sure to complete this initial post by Thursday at midnight.

By Sunday at midnight respond briefly to 2 of your peers in Spanish (aprox. 25 words for each response). Pretend that you are a health care professional and ask them follow up questions about their illness or try to diagnose it. If you receive questions about your illness, responding back to your peers can also count as your peer responses.

You will want to compose your posts on a word document or notepad, then paste it onto the discussion screen. You can only put in the accent marks when writing in Word, and this week we will be assessing your use of accents.

Immigration and Puerto Ricans in the U.S.

Please read the articles on immigration.

• • The Immigrant Family: Cultural Legacies and Cultural Changes
  • Why Puerto Ricans migrated to the United States in 1947-73.

Then view the video clips. Next, write a 200 word response to the questions below in English by Wednesday. Every response is valid, and all opinions will be respected. You will want to include supporting information from the readings and/or videos to further illustrate and strengthen your position. Make sure to address ALL of the following questions:

• How is the Puerto Rican experience similar to that of the other Latin American immigrants to the U.S.?
• What are some of the issues that make their experience unique from other immigrants?
• What are some of the challenges Puerto Ricans face when migrating to the mainland US?
• Should Puerto Ricans be afforded voting privileges in the US? Why or why not?
