Student Discussion That Needs to Be Responded to:

Teenagers face social pressures and face an increased risk of depression (Grand Canyon University, 2022). Bullying and peer pressure are forms of external stressors that cause adolescents to fall into depression (Grand Canyon University, 2022). If teenagers do not possess the tools to cope with these stressors they are at risk for teen suicide (Grand Canyon University, 2022). Primary prevention amongst adolescents is the best method of preventing teenagers from developing depression. It involves educating and promoting positive coping mechanisms instituted in the school. Gatekeeper training involves parents, school teachers, and community members learning about risk factors for depression and suicide (Grand Canyon University, 2022). This form of training better prepares parents to identify these risk factors on a daily basis. A peer system program called Reconnecting Youth, aims at giving the youth coping mechanisms against emotional distress and substance abuse. Once early warning signs are identified, adolescents can be assessed by crisis counselors. Adolescents can be referred to mental health facilities in order to help the adolescent regain positive coping mechanisms. Prevention will always be the primary tool used to combat mental illness and stop teens from committing suicide.
