Description
The critical application paper in this class will be a movie review in which you will describe
aspects of stress and coping depicted in film using theory (for example, you could use the ABCX
or Double ABCX model applied in your short paper assignment) and research discussed in this
course. This will be a movie of your choice—you do not have to receive my approval for your
movie choice however you must identify an issue in the movie that relates to the course materials
on stress and coping. After a brief description (1-page in length) of the film and its main
characters you will be required to explain how the film illustrates general principles of stress and
coping or perpetuates misconceptions regarding this topic.
Be explicit. Don’t assume we know the key aspects of the stimulus material (e.g., film), the
social science material, or how they go together. Instead, a useful strategy is to pretend that you
are summarizing, applying and explaining the material and the social science information to
someone who has never heard about it.
2. Make it clear when you are using material from the course. You must provide a reference
page and cite all course materials such as textbook and readings on this page. You must also
provide a reference for the movie and all other sources used in your paper. Personnel
communication such as the PowerPoint for the course do not need to be cited on the reference
page only within the text of your paper. Make sure to cite when you refer explicitly to theories,
concepts and studies covered in this course.
