NYCCT The Nursing Shortage Global Problem Discussion Responses

NYCCT The Nursing Shortage Global Problem Discussion Responses

Description

Please respond to each post separately.

1.In an article by Rosenkoetter et al. (2017), the discussion on the increasing trend of international migration among nurses moving to the United States is of key importance in the current healthcare system. When migrating from one country to another, not only is there a culture in the states but also in the healthcare field that requires getting used to. Due to the significant number of migrating nurses, a large gap in nursing shortages have been observed not just in the United States, but also worldwide. Nurses who leave their countries to come to the United States leave gaps in the workforce of their home countries. Developing countries already have severe shortages and limited access to healthcare. One challenge that healthcare organizations may face with IENs is the orientation and training process. Not only coming from a different practice setting, but also an entirely different country as well, standard orientation processes may not be sufficient for IENs. IENs may require specialized orientation and/or training to adequately assist them in adapting to the new workforce.

While educational programs vary greatly, especially across different countries, there are specific requirements that must be met to prove proficiency in the nursing field in the United States. For one, internally educated nurses are required to have occupational visas, pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Employees migrating to the United States may also require work visas which creates another level of logistical support to human resources departments of healthcare organizations (Rosenkoetter et al., 2017). The NCLEX-RN is a standardized test, upon completion, demonstrates nursing competence. Nurses are also required to be licensed by the state in which they intend to practice according to state nursing laws. IENs must also show proficiency in the English language and complete an education evaluation to determine comparability to the current United States nursing education standards (South University Online, n.d.).

2.Nursing Shortage

The nursing shortage is a global problem. The migration pattern of healthcare workers is dynamic and creates an imbalance between countries of origin and host countries (Bieski, 2007). Nurses migrate to other countries for a better quality of life and career opportunities to provide better income and security for their families. Nurses repatriate money to assist struggling families remaining in their country of origin (Stilwell, 2003)  I believe that all countries deserve the right to have access to the best care and healthcare systems.

The United States is known for offering the best patient care around the globe and sees the migration of nurses as a plus and an opportunity for growth. Some countries view the exportation of nurses overseas as a growing opportunity while some countries view it as a loss. The migration of nurses from less developed countries is a part of globalization which is an important part of the ethical and framework of the future decision to migrate (Hughes, 2022). The process for foreign educated nurses to achieve credentialing and language competency in the United States can be crucial. They must meet all the educational requirements, submit their prior credentials, take an English proficiency test, become certified with CGFNS, pass the NCLEX-RN test and start applying for their nursing licenses so they can work. Lastly they must obtain a work visa to work in the United States.
