I found multiple potential partners for the CEVSS center. But the difficulty was in making the final connections with these agencies. I was able to successfully connect a student to the VA in her area for mental health services. I had multiple contacts with agencies but very few true connections. I visited Dry Houtch, a coffee shop in Milwaukee for veterans. I had hoped this would be a more useful connection based upon an app they have developed. The app provides support services for veterans across the country. Since we have students in all parts of the country, I thought this would be a useful tool. But upon meeting with the organization and discussing it, I better understood the scope of the app. While the app had partner agencies across the country, veterans used the app only to speak with members from their particular agency. Since we already have this in the chat feature in Canvas, I could not make a good case for us to add this to our list of services. Another agency I was able to connect with was the ASO at the local airport. But it really didn’t provide any specific services I could pass along to my students as I would suspect my veteran students were already familiar with the organization.

Several other organizations I tried to connect with just fell through. For instance, I was very interested in seeing how agencies use equestrian therapy with veterans. I connected on the phone with an agency that works with both veterans and juveniles in detention. But we were never able to connect in person. There is a social service agency in Milwaukee that works with veterans. After a 30-45 minute conversation last semester with the director, I set up an appointment to visit the center. I called the morning of to confirm my appointment. But when I arrived I was told he did not show up for work that day and they were unaware of my appointment. Another agency I learned about in a conversation with a Vietnam Vet was Float Milwaukee. Float provides emersion pools which are reportedly very therapeutic. But they never responded to my multiple messages. Then, I tried to connect with the Disabled American Vets. A veteran I met at the Honor Flight had said he had been trying to connect with Herzing Kenosha but was unable to make a connection. After the event, I called and left multiple voicemail messages for him to set up a date and time for me to go, but he also never returned my calls.

So overall, I’d suggest to any veteran they must be very persistent in these contacts. I found it unfortunate that no one would return my persistent calls or make time for me. I hope they are making time for the veterans they serve

Our CEVSS team has located a wide variety of services and posted them on our CEVSS Page. These include the VA, the Student Veterans of America, and VA Home Loans.

Discuss how you have been applying Competency 8: Intervene with Individuals, Families, Groups. In addition, one intervention is through referrals and consultations.

I have been applying Competency 8: Intervene with Individuals, Families, Groups by making appropriate referrals on behalf of my patients and to assess them to give them the proper resources based on their circumstances. The resources range from diapers or being able to talk to a therapist if needed. In some cases, clothes or a carseat may even be provided for patients.

Describe how you have located and/or provided outside agency resources to your clients?

What amazed me when I started this semester at my practicum is that my preceptor has a list that she has put together over time with different resources so we have a list to always refer to when we need to help a patient. It’s such a good idea and she can always edit it and add to it. Being organized can save us so much time when helping our patients. This way, we don’t have to do research for different resources, all we have to do is pull up the document with all the resources that we could possibly need.

List at least three client resources you or your team identified for clients during your agency practicum.

There’s one resource in particular that we recommend to the NICU moms called Saul’s Light. It’s a nonprofit organization in New Orleans that provides support and community to families with babies in the NICU. They provide financial and emotional support, bereavement support, and connections to the community. This organization is so important to me because I’m a NICU mom of both my children and support is vital during such times. Second, we offer locations to diaper drives in the area. Third, there are the shelters for women and children that we give information for.
