Hello Dr Jimenez and classmates,
So I’ve saved the best competency (?) for last. I have yet to fulfill this requirement. Part of this was trying to describe best how I could do an evaluation and what that might look like. We talked about evaluating the CEVSS program itself, but as it’s in infancy stages, it was difficult to decide what to evaluate. Plus, as part of this grant, Herzing has hired an outside agency to evaluate the overall program- certainly a legitimate decision for a federally funded program. Then we had some short-term events which could be evaluated but it never really worked out for logistical reasons.
At the midterm this semester, my team of advisors and I decided I would look at Herzing’s Student Veteran leave policies and evaluate how those match up with the various state policies where we have ground campuses. When a student starts a semester, as soon as they participate in a course, they are financially and academically responsible for this course. If a student decides they desire (or must) leave the program after they started in a course, they will have to address the financial and academic issues with a “W” or failed grade. At times, a student may be sent on a military deployment which could be a few days to an indefinite period of time. Clearly, this causes some conflicts with the fast-paced online environment at Herzing. My first step is to review Herzing’s student leave policy. I will then look at the procedures for states where we have campuses (i.e. Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio, Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida). When we have this information, we can determine how Herzing’s overall policy matches or does not match these states’ policies on student veteran leaves. I will be passing on my findings and recommendations for others (the Deans, CEVSS, etc) to determine the course of action.
