Select a psychodynamic theory for in-depth investigation. Identify the theorist. Read at least one original writing from the theorist.
Address the following questions in your scholarly paper:
– What were the cultural and historical influence on the theory?
– What are the basic tenets of this theory? Provide an overview of the theory and examine 3-4 major concepts of the theory.
– How does the theory explain what constitutes healthy and adaptive functioning? Unhealthy and maladaptive functioning?
– Discuss the theory’s understanding and description of the change process in social work practice.
– Describe how this theory is used in clinical social work practice.
– What are the strengths and weaknesses of this theory? What are some common criticisms of the theory?
– Discuss the limits of this theory related to issues of oppression and vulnerable populations.
– Summarize research findings related to this theory.

ASSIGNMENT TWO: Application of Theory to Practice Paper
In this scholarly paper, students will examine in detail clinical work using two of the following psychodynamic concepts (choose one of the following):
– Working with defense mechanisms and ego functions
– Using transference and countertransference in clinical practice
– Projective identification
– Working with true self vs. false self
– Use of empathy in treatment
– The process of change using neutrality versus self-disclosure
– The therapeutic working alliance
For each topic, the paper should address the following:
– Define the concepts
– Include reference to one (or more) psychodynamic theories
– Explore the evolution of the concept and current use in social work practice
– Describe how you might use the concept in your clinical practice
– Describe the use of the concepts with marginalized populations
– Identify empirical research related to the concept
