Description
ASSIGNMENT: Use the internet to research information on a member of the U.S. Armed forces who has died while active duty. You will turn in a page or two of information, saved as a PDF file. This does not need to be written in journalistic style. Rather, reply to the questions below in bullet points, providing the information you have uncovered.
Step 1. Click on this MilitaryTime.com link: HonortheFallen.. Click through the photos and select a man or woman in the U.S. Armed forces who has died in the Iraq or Afghanistan war. You will be doing internet-only research on this person.
Step 2. After you have identified a service member, copy and paste on to a word doc – the information about the fallen officer that is provided on “Honor the Fallen.”
Step 3. Then, use search engines such as Google, and also use social media sites to help you look up additional information on the person you have selected.
Provide the following information:
- In a sentence or two, tell me why you selected this person to research?
- List basic information about this person: age, rank, branch of service, hometown.
- When did this person die and what were the circumstances of death?
NOW DIG DEEPER, LOOKING FOR MORE PERSONAL IDENTIFIERS WHICH DISTINCTLY APPLY TO YOUR CHOOSEN PERSON.
- List at least 2 or 3 anecdotes or “quotes” about this person from others, or perhaps from blogs, newspapers or TV news reports, perhaps a Facebook page or YouTube post by friends of family members. List where you found the anecdotes or quotes.
NOTE: Go beyond the generic and repetitive websites such as www.militarytimes.comLinks to an external site. and www.findagravesite.comLinks to an external site.. These sites did not generate their material – they are commemorative sites which reprint information and photos from official announcements and accounts prepared by other media.
Go beyond the “He/She is a hero” quotes, or postings by well meaning strangers who kindly offer condolences and praise, but really had no connection with your service person.
Look for specific recollections of friends, family or fellow soldiers, such as the one below:
Date:8/7/13
CPL McKriski,
I never knew who you were. I do know that you were my Marine. I was there the night of the accident that claimed your life. I was the Corpsman who tried to save your life and send you home to your family. I failed my mission and for that I am sorry. I think of you often and wish I could have known you. It has been five years, but sometimes it feels like yesterday. I was in that water with you. My apologies to your family. May you guard the streets from Heaven with pride.
Your doc,
HM1(FMF) T. J. Charles, ret.
