LAPC Journalism The Pressure of Being a College Student Paper

LAPC Journalism The Pressure of Being a College Student Paper

Description

ASSIGNMENT:

STEP 1: Pick one of the following suggested topics, or chose your own topic, as long as it is newsworthy and approved by the professor.

  • Midterms/Finals – How do you prepare for the big exams?
  • Pressures of being a college student – How do you cope with going to school and maintaining work and a life outside of school?
  • Politics – Can students make a difference? Can their voices be heard?
  • Textbooks – Are they too expensive? Is it better to rent or buy?
  • Covid19 – How has it changed your life? What are you doing to survive being cooped up at home?

STEP 2: Interview students – or if class is online – you can interview ANYONE – in person or by phone.

  • You will need to come up with three solid, usable quotes, all from different people.
  • You may need to interview six or more people to get strong quotes.
  • You can record their answers or write them down, word for word.

INTERVIEW TIPS: Call or walk up to students, introduce yourself and explain that you would like to talk to them:

“Hi, my name is Tracie, I am a student and a campus news-reporter. I am working on a story about (Fill in the blank) for my journalism class. Can I ask you a quick question?”

If they say NO: Move on. Don’t waste your time trying to convince them to talk. If they say YES, and you want to record the interview, ask them:

“Is it ok if I record this interview? I want to make sure I accurately write your quote.”

Then, begin the interview, but before you ask any questions, ask the following first:

“OK, I am recording now. That’s OK, right? Can I first get your name, and could you spell it for me? Are you a student, and if so, what are you studying?”

Then, ask your questions.

STEP 3: Write a brief story. Include all three quotes.

REMEMBER: A quote needs to be set up properly. There must be a transition line (paragraph) containing solid facts/information before the quote. The quote must then be in its own paragraph.
