Team Motivational Strategy for Occupational Health and Safety

For this assignment, you will read the following case study and then write a recommendation for a strategy to address the situation.

Case Study

Bill is the team leader who brings forward information from the top management that the safety problem on the plant floor cannot be tolerated. Over the last year accidents in the workplace have risen from 1.2 percent to 6.5 percent. Bill is asking this team to find a strategy to motivate employees to work as a team to get the safety on the plant floor up much higher. There are several employees on the team who want to create a safer workplace with greater health and wellness overall for employees. However, there are some challenges with some team members to consider.

Betty is an employee who seems to be working hard at her job, but she feels overloaded with work. She has a lot of anxiety and expresses that she has back pain that makes it hard for her to do her job and causes her stress at home. High workloads are not unusual in the workplace and are the accepted norm.

Additionally, Sara and Sam have both indicated that they have been trying to use the suggested team interventions. They believe there is a low level of psychological safety on the team.

Three team members have gone to Human Resources, reporting that Casey has been bullying fellow team members.  

Bill already brought in a trainer who offered a two-day training, which emphasized healthy workplace practices as well as team dialogue and brainstorming to enhance safety. So far, there is no change in the number of accidents. Bill is asking the team to provide a recommendation to enhance team motivation for occupational health and safety this year.

Assignment Instructions

To complete this assignment, you will first need to follow the instructions provided in the assignment preparations, in your previous activity. The preparation instructions state to research two articles on strategies to enhance occupational health and safety in a team and consider one theory of motivation that might be relevant to the team situation described in the case study. You will then develop a strategy based on the articles you read that could be applied to the situation.

Once your research has been completed, write a three-page paper in which you discuss two articles on workplace strategies to occupational health and safety and provide five recommendations to enhance occupational health and safety in this workplace. Based on your recommendations, provide one theory of motivation that is most relevant to the recommendations in this situation. Cite at least one scholarly article that you found through working with Capella University Library resources. Conclude your paper by explaining the potential for the motivational strategy you would apply for the team based on this theory as well as the limitations of the approach.
