Introduction to the US Healthcare System Responses

Introduction to the US Healthcare System Responses

Description

Healthcare staffing shortages are a critical issue in the healthcare industry at this time. Healthcare organizations must be able to attract and retain quality providers and ancillary staff. For this discussion, assume the role of a healthcare department manager for one of the following entities: a nursing home, a dental clinic, a physical rehabilitation center, or a maternal-fetal medicine clinic.

Identify the key positions that you would be responsible for staffing. Research job descriptions and qualifications for these positions from at least two existing organizations who hire for these roles. Create a comprehensive list of qualifications that these staff members need to possess in order to be qualified to assume the role.

Be sure to write an initial, substantive post by Thursday at 11:59 p.m. MT and respond to two or more peers with substantive responses by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MT. A substantive initial post answers the question presented completely and/or asks a thoughtful question pertaining to the topic. Substantive peer responses ask thoughtful questions pertaining to the topic and/or answers a question (in detail) posted by another student. Support your statements with logic and cite any information that is specifically referenced in your comments. Post your initial response early and check back often to continue the discussion. Be sure to respond to your peers’ and instructor’s posts, as well.

As a healthcare department manager at a maternal-fetal medicine clinic, I would be responsible for staffing the following positions: a perinatologist, a maternal-fetal medicine sonographer, a patient service representative, and a certified medical assistant (CMA).

A perinatologist is an “Ob/Gyn who has completed addition training through formal fellowship and gained advanced knowledge of the obstetrical, medical, genetic, and surgical complications of pregnancy” (uchealth.org). They specialize in prenatal care by treating pregnancies that are classified as high-risk and providing care for the pregnant person as well as diagnosing and managing fetal health conditions. Additionally, they provide postnatal care due to problems with labor and delivery problems because of health conditions. The qualifications that a Perinatologist would need to possess in order to be qualified for the position would be to possess a BE/BC in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, a BE/BC Ob/Gyn, and have an active license in the state that the position is in (indeed.com).

A certified medical assistant (CMA) assists with preparing charts, drawing blood, completing lab forms and record requests, and assisting the perinatologist with in-office procedures. They are also responsible for documenting care provided and performed procedures and assessing situational severity when urgent situations arise. In order to qualify to apply as a medical assistant in a maternal-fetal medicine clinic, the candidate must have a high school diploma or GED, completed the CMA program and passed the National Medical Assistant Certification Exam, have one year old health care experience as a CNA, MA, PCT, or EMT, hold a current Basic Life Support certification or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment, and must be able to accurately and effectively perform all duties of the job (ziprecruiter.com).

A maternal-fetal medicine sonographer performs ultrasound exams on women with high-risk pregnancies. They may work in a maternal-fetal medical clinic or in a hospital setting. They will assist with procedures relating to the pregnancy and to the care of the fetus such as chronic villi sampling and amniocentesis. They must also accurately and timely enter all reports and verify completion of data entry components. The qualifications for a maternal-fetal medicine sonographer include graduating from an accredited ultrasound technologist program and posses one of the following  licenses/certifications: “registered as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS), Vascular Technologist (RVT), or Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or registered as a Technologist (RT) and certified in Sonography (S) by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)” (linkedin.com). They must also hold a state licensure if required by law as well as hold a current Basic Life Support certification.

These comprehensive qualifications will help ensure that the staff members in the physical rehabilitation center are well-equipped to provide high-quality care and support to patients on their road to recovery and improved functionality.
