Did you face any challenges, any success? If so, what were they?
During this week, I had an educative clinical experience through interacting with different patients in my clinical practice. However, I experienced different mental conflicts while trying to resolve patient cases in my line of duty. As part of my academic requirement as a nurse, clinical practice and rotations in a clinical setting or a healthcare facility is a requirement of the program. This week’s clinical experience was a success, regardless of the few challenges that I faced along the way. The week was a success since I had the opportunity to interact with different medical professionals and work on different patient cases. I managed to deal with patients with different medical conditions including; cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and arthritis.
This week’s clinical experience was educative and beneficial since I gained a lot of knowledge and skills that will be useful for future application purposes. As stated, I also faced some challenges during my clinical practice and experience. Clinical practice comes with social distancing challenges especially while handling patients with communicable diseases (Nanda & Wasan, 2020). Also, due to the presence of the coronavirus, maintaining social distancing is a necessity to help in curbing the spread of the virus. However, I managed to overcome this by using personal protective equipment while handling patients.
Patient Assessment, Signs & Symptoms, Plan Of Care and Differential Diagnosis
Patient assessment is essential since it allows a healthcare practitioner to understand a patient’s case in detail and help in coming up with a correct diagnosis and treatment plan for the patient. During my clinical experience, I handled a 65-year-old male patient who had presented to the clinic complaining of chest pain, difficulty in breathing, and breathlessness. The patient stated that he had and has never incurred any rib injury. The patient had a medical history of chest complaints in his early childhood and has also been a smoker. The presented symptoms of the patient are therefore linked with different health conditions which necessitates differential diagnosis to help in coming up with an accurate diagnosis (Bautz & Schneider, 2020). From the symptoms presented, the patient could either be having three different types of conditions including; cardiovascular disease, pneumonia, or asthma. After further evaluation through conducting laboratory tests, the possibility of cardiovascular disease was eliminated. The primary diagnosis of the patient was asthma.
The health promotion intervention for this patient.
The health intervention for this patient is the use of inhaled corticosteroids such as fluticasone propionate, and budesonide. The patient should also avoid asthma triggers and take anti-hypersensitivity medications. He should also quit smoking since he is a smoker (Bautz & Schneider, 2020). The patient should also ensure that they take the prescribed medication as required and monitor the progress and body responses as required.
Week 2 Clinical Experience Lessons
Throughout the week, I learned different things which can be beneficial to me as an advanced practice nurse. Through interacting and handling different cases, I was able to learn, understand, and apply the concept of differential diagnosis. I also learned the importance of patient care skills through observing other professional nurses of high ranks and how they cared for patients. All nursing practices should be evidence-based.
