Continuous variables can take on any value within a given range and are typically measured with scales or thermometers (Thomson & Emery, 2014). They are often measured with high-precision instruments and are integral to scientific research, statistical analysis, and decision-making processes in numerous fields. Examples could include age (measured in years), height (measured in inches or centimeters), weight (measured in pounds or kilograms), temperature (measured in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit), and income (measured in dollars).

Discrete variables are those that can only ever take on certain predetermined values and are often tallied. Examples are the number of children in a family, the number of cars in a parking lot, the number of employees in a company, the number of books in a library, and number of goals scored in a soccer match. Categorical variables, on the other hand, represent different categories or groups and cannot be measured in a numerical sense. Examples include gender (with categories like male and female), education level (with categories like high school, bachelor’s, master’s), and product categories (e.g., electronics, clothing, food).

In my practicum, I will select variables based on the research question and data characteristics. For instance, for studying temperature’s effect on a chemical reaction, I would use temperature as a continuous variable. Analyzing academic program enrollments might involve discrete variables like student counts, while categorical variables could group data, like segmenting customers based on preferences.

Continuous Variables:

  1. Patient’s body temperature in Celsius.
  2. Blood pressure reading in mm Hg.
  3. Duration of patient’s sleep in hours.
  4. Patient’s blood glucose level in mg/dL.
  5. Age of a patient in years.

Discrete Variables:

  1. Number of medications taken by a patient daily.
  2. Number of times a patient visited the ER in the past year.
  3. Days spent in the hospital during a particular admission.
  4. Number of therapy sessions attended in a month.
  5. Number of broken bones a patient has had in their lifetime.

Categorical Variables:

  1. Type of diagnosis (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, depression).
  2. Gender of the patient (e.g., male, female, other).
  3. Smoking status (e.g., non-smoker, current smoker, former smoker).
  4. Type of surgical procedure (e.g., appendectomy, cesarean section, knee replacement).
  5. Patient’s health insurance type (e.g., private, public, none).

For my practicum, I intend to focus on the following variables:

  • Patient’s body temperature as it relates to infection after surgical procedures.
  • Number of times a patient visited the ER, as it may provide insights into post-operative complications or other issues.
  • Type of diagnosis, which will allow for the categorization and study of outcomes based on different diseases.
