Respond to at least one peer or the instructor. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification.
.Hello Dr. Class,
One of the major or key concepts that I learned that appealed to me the most was learning in depth about the different branches of areas of microbiology such as epidemiology of infectious diseases. I have always wondered or been interested about pathogens. As I work in the field of pediatrics, I constantly see several young children have diseases that affect their skin, nervous, and circulatory systems. As we have learned throughout this course, “the skin happens to be a very common portal of entry” (Cowan, 2020) in addition to there being bacterial and viral diseases of the skin and eyes. I think it was interesting to recognize the differences between viral and bacterial infections. Bacterial infections can be identified as Staphylococcus, Cutaneous Anthrax, and Tetanus. With bacterial infections, antibiotics are necessary to help kill or block bacteria to disallow bacteria growth to ensure treatment. Whereas, on the contrary, viral infections such as COVID-19, rhinoviruses, and HIV, contain genetic information that requires a living organism to spread from the host’s body to their cells.
The concepts of Microbiology and the information I learned will be beneficial to apply and use in future courses such as Pathophysiology. Just as Anatomy & Physiology created a helpful foundation for learning about Microbiology, Microbiology content can help build onto Pathophysiology. As pathophysiology focuses primarily on diseases and injury, the concepts can easily merge together to indicate how infectious diseases and pathogens are properly diagnosed.
Furthermore, the importance of studying microbiology can greatly be connected to health care careers and nursing professions because it enables health care professionals to understand how significant microbes and pathogen play in diverse environments as well as in diverse people and backgrounds. In addition, Microbiology is able to help us identify gram positive or gram negative microbes as well as help us learn more about epidemics, pandemics, outbreaks, and more to be able to better serve the communities, and at large, the world. As we touched on in the course, Medical Microbiology helps to explain the immune system in more detail as the body is responding to microorganisms and bacteria.
Ultimately, I enjoyed being a student in this course & having Dr. Burnside as my professor! Your live lectures and tutoring sessions were very helpful. I appreciate all your assistance this session!
