Hello Professor and Class,

B cells are a type of white blood cell that play a crucial role in the immune response against infections. When your body encounters bacteria, B cells are activated and produce proteins called antibodies. These antibodies bind to the specific bacteria causing the infection, marking them for destruction by other components of the immune system (Janeway, Travers, Walport, & Shlomchik, 2001). B cells undergo a process called clonal selection, which means that they are able to recognize and respond to specific pathogens. This process allows your immune system to generate a diverse repertoire of B cells that can recognize a wide range of pathogens. In addition to producing antibodies, B cells can also differentiate into memory B cells (Alberts et al., 2002). These memory B cells “remember” the specific bacteria that caused the infection, allowing for a faster and more efficient immune response if you encounter the same bacteria in the future.
