ASU Definition of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Discussion Response

ASU Definition of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Discussion Response

Reply to Antuwan:

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been defined into different clusters intrusive symptoms, avoidance symptoms, negative alterations in cognition and mood, and alterations in arousal and reactivity (Hafstad et al., 2014). When looking at the alterations in cognitions and mood the person will forget different parts of the traumatic event, have negative views about themselves, other people, etc., blame themselves about the consequences of the traumatic events, in a constant negative state, have no interest in activities, or experience positive emotions (Sanderson, 2013). When someone is experiencing these alterations in their cognition and mood, then it could be difficult for someone to come back from.

When someone is going through PTSD, then it could possibly be comorbid with major depressive disorder (Hafstad et al., 2014). When individuals experiencing PTSD symptoms, then it could lead to other disorders. It has been shown that these individuals have more negative perceptions of themselves and the world than people without PTSD (Kaczkurkin et al., 2017). The severity of alterations in cognitions and mood combined with the symptoms of major depressive disorders make it difficult for someone to cope with. The negative perception of themselves, blaming themselves, in conjunction with the symptoms of major depressive disorder could present an irritable mood and increase the risk of suicide (Bains & Abdijadid, 2023).

Another reason why this could be difficult to cope with is because of the emotional dysregulation. The mood alterations in PTSD can lead to someone being irritable and with these it could make it hard to cope. For example, if someone has experienced being in a car accident that caused them to being in the hospital, then being in a car or driving could be difficult for them. The person could have an intense amount of fear and anxiety. This could lead to a depression because the person may have to find a different way of transportation. The person may also blame themselves of the consequence of the car accident. The comorbidity of MDD and PTSD could lead to irritable mood when around others. If not treated with the correct coping skills, then as stated previously could lead to MDD as well.
