Description
After reading Chapter 7 of your text, write a paper answering the following prompt:
Discuss how the concepts of aircraft performance in unaccelerated flight, from Chapter 7 of the text and this week’s core concepts, can be applied practically to flight operations. Give examples of how knowledge of these topics can help to increase safety. In addition, support your work with a sample thrust and power required curve and explain how they are derived from a drag table and graph (like the one we generated in Module 3).
The following articles can help to give examples of practical application of these concepts:
- Proficiency: Behind the Power Curve/AOPALinks to an external site.
- Control your speed… in cruise/AirbusLinks to an external site.
Here are additional resources from the FAA for practical application of the topics:
- Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge – Chapter 5 (PDF)/FAALinks to an external site.
- Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge – Chapter 11 (PDF)/FAALinks to an external site.
Include in your paper a discussion of at least two of the following topics (you may provide sample problems and/or discuss the topics as they relate to aircraft performance):
- Maximum range airspeed
- Maximum endurance airspeed
- Best climb conditions
- Best rate of climb (ROC) and associated airspeed
- Best angle of climb (AOC) and associated airspeed
- Maximum forward airspeed
- Best glide airspeed
You must include the following formulas with examples and explanations/discussion on how they relate to this topic:
- Thrust to power relationship
- Weight change influence on performance airspeeds
- ROC and AOC relationships
