The Abstract

In the age of COVID-19, technology has been used as a temporary solution to limit the spread of infection, which simultaneously allows employees to work in a safe space, and affords students the opportunity to learn from home. However, this replacement of in-house teaching and learning, has gotten mixed results from several parents, teachers, and students throughout the United States and across the world. More specifically, there has been a growing concern, surrounding the impacts of online learning on nursing students and how this will influence future nursing practice. The following study will introduce the audience to the current dynamics of the online learning experience for nursing students, attempt to outline the beneficiality of online schooling, and will attempt to provide solutions for coping with the circumstances and outcomes.

The Online Learning Experience: A Nursing Edition

Aims and Objectives

The aim of this study is to explain the circumstances surrounding the online learning experience for the nursing student, and determine how effective online schooling truly is within the nursing profession. Being that we are in the age of modern technology, it can be appropriately deduced that the majority of our systems take advantage of computers and computer based apparatuses. This application can be seen in our grocery stores, the transportation system, within the healthcare industry, and in many other areas. Technology has provided great ease and benefit for society, yet there are many consequences of technology as well. When it comes to the nursing student and nursing school, these effects have not thoroughly been explored, though there are several nursing students enduring these circumstances. In addition, not only are the students enduring these effects, but spectators are pondering on how this experience will influence these students post graduation.

Currently, nursing schools have incorporated virtual learning techniques, such as online lectures and virtual simulations, to bridge the gap and still encourage learning. However, this indeed is not the routine or typical form of learning for many students, which can result in additional strain and learning gaps. The overall problem is that online nursing school has been perceived as less effective, because critics believe that students need hands-on experience, to facilitate proper learning, and due to the lack of clinical experience, it is perceived that students will have a decreased ability to perform in the field. There are three overall objectives of this study, which are to (1) establish the basis of the online nursing school experience (including both the challenges and strengths), (2) determine how online nursing school impacts the student, and (3) ultimately discover how these impacts may influence nursing practice.

Background

Throughout time we can see the adaptations that are done in order for humans to advance in productivity, comfortability, accessibility, etc. The healthcare profession revolves around sciences and technology, both are constantly changing and evolving. Looking at the Charles Darwin theory of evolution, survival of the fittest. For a species to keep existing they must adapt to the environment around them, those who do not will cease to exist. As new discoveries become known, we must make room to adjust and leave the previous customs behind.

Nurses have evolved throughout time in many areas. New practices being implemented to increase quality of care for the patients proven to be effective by evidence based practices. Florence Nightingale is considered the light in the dark for the nursing and healthcare profession, showing the way for those who follow after her. According to Grove and Gray (2019) she is “recognized as the first nurse researcher, with her initial studies focused on the importance of a healthy environment in promoting patients’ physical and mental well-being.” She was also known for her “data collection and statistical analyses, especially during the Crimean War” (Grove and Gray, 2019). Florence has taught the importance of researching in order to understand the data, what it means, the conclusions can be drawn, and any changes needed.

Due to the Worldwide COVID-19 pandemic many different education systems had to adjust their ways of teaching. Converting strictly to online resources, nursing programs typically run mostly on the tactile learning method. It has been mentioned that “the growing number of online nursing programs increased the demand to utilize interactive virtual patient learning systems in online nursing courses” (Abuatiq, 2019). An evaluation in the effectiveness of online learning is needed for nursing students, to provide resources to ensure enough preparation for them to provide the best quality of care when they graduate and are in the field.

Methodology and Method.

Findings etc..

Several studies were done to evaluate whether or not the online learning experience was being effective for the nursing students. The findings included in a particular study showing that in the BSN nursing students population “36.7% reported ‘strongly disagree’ for item #2:

‘The e-learning system helped me improve my oral communication?’ And 30% ‘strongly disagree’ to item #3: ‘The e-learning system helped me improve my written communication?’ (Abuatiq, 2019). According to Delva et al. (2019) a study with “four interviews were conducted via telephone (n = 3) and in person (n = 1) with experts from nursing organizations and accrediting agencies.” They “emphasized that nursing students need hands on clinical experience to prepare them for real world scenarios. If they are not given the chance to practice like other students, then the institution would not be doing their job to ensure that students have enough practice to excel in the clinical world” (Delva et al., 2019). A qualitative descriptive study was conducted where nursing students were given a website resource, to be used to view four different videos showing how to perform certain clinical practices. The students were to view the videos 15 days before the clinical setting and were able to view the videos again on their phones in the clinical setting. It was stated that the students “underlined the need to talk to a teacher or a tutor, especially when a technique is explained for the first time. The use of practice labs is described as instrumental to improve the manual skills each technique requires” (Barisone, 2019).

There are advantages of virtual learning as well, such as easier accessibility, and practice without the pressures of person to person interaction to induce nervousness in certain situations. A study was conducted to see the challenges in teaching palliative care to nursing students during this COVID-19 pandemic. One of the participants stated “virtual simulation on breaking bad news was new and engaging activity, as it gave a sense of realism in challenging our communication skills” (Cassum et al., 2020). It was also stated that the “majority (70%) of the participants felt that the course was delivered in a structured and organized manner and that they were able to complete the learning task efficiently” (Cassum et al., 2020).
