HIUS 341 Business and Technical History of American Politics Primary Source
The student will write a 35-page paper analyzing assigned primarysources on the central government’s size, scope, and power. Thepaper will focus on pertinent and assigned sections of Tocqueville.The student will use parenthetical citations as needed and willprovide a bibliography in proper current Turabian format. Tocquevillemust be the only source. The paper must begin with the studentsname and the date in the upper right-hand corner, followed by aspace, and then the beginning of the paper itself. Do not include atitle page.
InThe paper’s body, the student, must key in on what he/shebelieves are the 23 most important issues in the assigned excerptsof Tocqueville. These issues will generally fall under the aegis ofthe central government’s size/scope/power. The student must briefly (in no more than 1.5 pages) overview Tocquevilles contentand ideas and then apply what he/she has learned about this era ofAmerican politics to his/her views. According to Tocqueville, what isthe American conception of government? What is its role in the livesof citizens? Is his assessment is accurate? This is an academicpaper, and the student must follow the academic standards of writing.Furthermore, this is not a summary. The student is not simplyrestating what Tocqueville wrote. The student is breaking it downand assessing its strengths and weaknesses.
