Ethical, Legal, and Business Issues in Multiple Hurdle Selection Processes
When developing a selection process, a personnelconsultant must consider criterion measures that are fair and valid forapplicants. There are no mandates to follow either the multiple hurdleor the composite model; rather, the circumstances will indicate that onemodel may be more appropriate in a given situation. The Society forIndustrial and Organizational Psychologys Principles for the Validation and Use of Personnel Selection (2003)advocates using multiple criteria and methods in selection. Inconsidering multiple methods and criteria in selection, the consultantmust decide if prospective job candidates are to score above a specificcutoff point on each assessment (multiple hurdle model) or achieve acomposite weighted score across all assessments (composite model). Usingmultiple assessments ensures greater coverage in covering jobrequirements, but there is a cost (Pulakos, 2005).
